Welcome File Question

is this statement true?

the container looks for servlet mapping in the DD before it look for <welcome-file-list>?

The container would take the <welcome-file-list> when it parses through the xml. Whether or not that <welcome-file-list> is a servlet that exists (or not or any page whether it be a static page) I don't think matters.

As for your question... I would guess that it would be vendor specific and not a written part of the spec.

Basically what you're asking is whether an arbitrary servlet can be used as a welcome/index page. And the answer is yes, it can. This is certain regardless of how the container parses the DD, though in all likelihood it does all the servlets first, instantiates them, then stores the welcome list, which is then only referenced when a request is made (and the URL may then resolve to a servlet, JSP, static page etc.) That seems the most sensible, but far from only, way to do it.
