We actually have a forum for the SCJA exam. I am going to move this thread to that forum.

Hi Namitta,

Welcome to JavaRanch!

The SCJP Sun Certified Programmer for Java 5 Study Guide (Exam 310-055), by Bert and Kathy, is written specifically for SCJP 5.0 exam. If you're preparing for SCJP exam, I would highly recommend this book. However, if you're going for SCJA, this book is definitely not enough.

SCJA resources:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Sun_Certified_Java_Associate/links
UML guide for the SCJA exam

Commercial products:
Whizlabs SCJA Exam Simulator
Sun ePractice Certification Exam for the SCJA
ePlanet: Sun Certified Java Associate for the Java 2 Platform SCJA Solution Guide

Btw, I have never purchased any of the commercial products listed above. So I can't comment on whether they're useful or not.

thanks a lot joyce!u sure did bring "joy" to me when i saw a post from someone atleast from the ranch and getting back to the content well the e-planet book that you suggested has supposedly been given a thumbs down by about three people in this group itself so i guess i'd rather refrain from gettin into that.but i really found the hfoo handbook by dave wood to be some stuff!!thanks a lot for that link by the way are you done giving SCJA?if yes wot material did you use?and how long do you suggest i take to prepare for the exam so that i pass the exam in just one attempt?and i am planning to give the SCJP after this exam so do you suggest i buy the book by kathy and bert right away or wait to get done with this one first and then move on to the next?is there anything uselful for SCJA in these books?
thanks a lot once again.
waiting for your reply on my new found queries!!

by the way are you done giving SCJA?if yes wot material did you use?and how long do you suggest i take to prepare for the exam so that i pass the exam in just one attempt?

Yeah, I took the SCJA beta exam mid of last year. As for how long it takes to prepare for the exam, it depends on how much you've already known about the stuff stated in the SCJA objectives, how fast you can absorb new things, and how much time you're willing to commit per day.

Most of the study materials can be obtained from the Sun website. Mahesh had kindly consolidated the SCJA resources at his SCJA yahoo group while he was preparing for the beta exam. You might want to consider purchasing a commerical product with hundreds of mock questions to gauge your readiness for the exam.

do you have any clue as to whether dave wood has come out with his hfoo book yet?
I've no idea.
