Hi all, I would like to know whether we need to use a db like access/oracle for our project. The spec says , the current system uses a flat file as db. And, wants us to convert this flat file into a binary file(what does this mean?). Do we have to convert it to a db like access/oracle. (i.e) our conversion tool must move the data in the flat file to a db like access/oracle. And, where we will be using the classes (Data,etc) provided by the sun. No, the converter quite simply uses one of the methods of the Data class to write info record by record to your DB. This project involves using this Data class to manipulate Data instead of an RDBMS. Study the Data class in depth and you will see that coupled with the FieldInfo and DataInfo classes you are supplied with what you need to manipulate your data.
So, we shouldn't use any RDBMS like Oracle/SQL Server. We, just have to convert the flat text file in ASCII format to a binary format. And, Data class is used to access the flat file, and not in the conversion tool whcih we should write. Thanks Shankar S http://shankar.enmail.com
Shankar After the conversion from flat file to binary, your binary file takes on the form of a Database Table. You will not use your converter after this. From your project you will manipulate the Data Class which in turn manipulates your binary file. A clear understanding of what the Data Class methods are doing will help you to see what is going on when querying and searching the Binary File.
Hi, Where can I find details of DATA class?. Which package contains DATA class. I was searching in the docs directory. But I need to know the package?. Is it in I/O package?. Thanks Raj
Raj The data class is created in the assn material, if you have the assignment then you would know that it is a partially complete package given to us by Sun to work with. It is not part of the API Greg
Greg, Thanks for your information. I am preparing for the developers certification. But I haven't downloaded anything yet. I am developing some practice systems using RMI, Swing, threads, Javabeans, servlets etc. Am I doing the right thing?. Even though Java Beans, Servlets may not be in the scope, I am covering them so that I will know. Thanks Raj
