Hi,
I've been working on the developer assignement and have a question about implementing metadata for the Data class. I'm wondering if this is overkill and may actually cause the grader to take marks off for complexity.
By implementing another .db file that includes entries for 'tablename' and 'filename' I end up managing a collection of Data instances rather than a single Data instance.
Is this beyond the scope of the assignment?
Does anyone think this is overkill?
Thanks!!

Steve,
Some people hardcode the fields to create in their DataConverter, some (me included) just put the field definitions (name + length) in a text or .properties file.
Yes, I think that using a separate database for metadata is overkill (how are you going to create that one?), but then my design is overkill in other areas. You probably shouldn't spend time on anything that's not specified in your instructions or required by your design.

Thanks Jerry!
Have you passed the exam yet?

Steve,
No, I haven't. My super-robust server design isn't currently testing well under assault from several concurrent clients; I've got some synchronization issues to work out. The database client functions well, and I've got my GUI sketched out but not built. I'm considering removing some features not absolutely required by the instructions - maybe I should have heeded my own advice and stayed completely away from anything not absolutely required. Oh, well, another couple of weeks and I'll be ready to wrap it up. I'll post a brag notice when I do.

Hi Jerry,
Cool! It sounds like we're both very close. I've prototyped all of the different pieces, and got everything up and running, but I'm starting over from scratch. I want a very clean design and straight forward code (baby code!) I hope to incorporate what I learned doing the prototype and what I've been reading on the boards. It seems from the folks that have passed that the KISS strategy is a good one.
It'll probably take me another week or two as well (although I've been fading a little down the stretch here).
Good luck!
Steve
