According to Extreme Tracking, yesterday we had more people visit us in one day than any other day. It also looks like this month will be our best month ever.
Just a little trivia to pass the time.

I would not have believed it unless our trailboss himself have told it. More than 17,000 users in one day?
Boss, can we know how many registered users, how many bartendars and sheriffs are there in our ranch so far?

IMHO it is because unemployment is growing. What to do else?
BTW, I wanted to ask, already a lot of time ago, what does mean trail in "trailboss"?

back in the old days, cowboys used to lead cattle from the ranges of Texas to the rail heads in Kansas. The Chisolm Trail was one of the leading routes. The person who led the cattle drive was called the "trail boss".

how many registered users ... in our ranch so far?
On December 2nd, member number 40787 registered. We've likely already added one or two Greenhorns since then.

Thanks Thomas Paul,
my dictionary does not know anything about it. Might be JR should have had a Glossary or History page?
Sorry... also ancient yearning to ask about: X-mas is for life? What does it mean?
Ashik,
your blinking eyes are very impressive! I have not been impressed by the figure untill saw you blinking

Its a corruption of an animal welfare message "A dog is for life, not just for Christmas" which tries to stop people buying pets as Christmas presents without thinking of the time and money it takes to look after them. A lot of animals are abandoned just after Christmas.

Found the reference... it's from an editorial by Alan Williamson, editor of JDJ.

Marilyn,
Thomas Paul, Linda,
thank you.
I am very busy looking thru all your references.
Ashik,
I made a mistake...
Ashik,
your blinking eyes are very impressive! I have not been impressed by the (not figure but) digit untill saw you blinking.

Thomas Paul and Marilyn,
how do you make (supposedly automatically) that your "quote:" appears with
"Originally posted by user-name:..."?
Marilyn,
Who was more paid Scheriff or trail boss?
May I defect to Indians?

Thomas Paul,
I've got killed all spiders in my room. But couldn't find anything about X-mas in your link.
Linda,
A lot of animals are abandoned just after Christmas.

Sad... I did not observe such habit in countries with cold (continental) winters. Usually 95% of proverbs have direct correspondence in other languages but this one is not familiar to me. ..

If you click on the little " icon above the post (at the end of the line of icons) it will quote that post in your response.
As to my link, didn't you see the title of Alan's editorial?

Yes, I have got the quotes.
Yes, I have read Alan's editorial... but understood that you did not...So far, Linda Jones wins the prize of explanation what is "Xmas for life"
BTW, Alan's editorial: 2-3 pages about nothing. The only "useful" reference was to to deja.com. That is not openable or it was again some linguistic perversion that I couldn't catch on the fly?

Geez Tom, give him a break. YOU try communicating in a foreign language, and you might not understand everything perfectly either  .

Thomas Paul,
it is forum, i.e. discussion.
I am grateful for answers, but we already return to the same:enough is enough. When it is not, then it is not.
Cindy,
I did not ask for any breaks. Show will go on.
The problem is that I do not understand even my native Russian in Hollywood films!

Cindy and Dave,
this is a relief, because I started believing that US are ahead of Russia in inventing new Russian.
Can somebody help me to find the beginning of
Translation and language comparison
It is from MD
And go there

When we upgrade to the newer release of UBB a year ago, the forums changed URLs. As a result some of the older topics have links in them that still point to www.javaranch.com/ubb/etc. when they should now point to saloon.javaranch.com/ubb/etc.
I went in and fixed the link in the topic that you pointed to in MD, but of course that topic itself still has stuff using the old URL
The conversation on languages was on offshoot of the How Islamic fundamentalists plan to conquer the world ! topic that got WAY out of hand.
The last page of that wandered off into a linguistics conversation and Map started the new thread.
Hope that is what you wanted.

I'm sorry. It is from April 1999 and seems to be currently out of print. Perhaps I will be able to find another one.
