Just a basic question. Generally how long does it take to complete the assignment, and how much time does Sun give you to complete it? Thanks for any replies.

Based on my understanding, I don't think there is any stipulated time limit for completing the exam.

I downloaded mine on May 25th. I still have the GUI and documentation to finish. I would say that if you worked on it 40 hours a week you should be able to complete it in 2 - 3 weeks.

Seconded. Sun somewhere gives an estimate of 1 week for the assignment, but I think this is achievable only if you are an experienced Java developer who is already proficient at Swing, RMI, etc. Personally it took me about 2-3 working weeks in terms of hours spent, and more than 2 months in terms of elapsed time.

I haven't received my score yet, so who knows if I've actually finished. However, I spent a pretty intense couple of months working on the assignment. I haven't done a whole lot of professional Java programming, but I'm experienced with object oriented programming, primarily C++, and I've used several different class libraries, some of which are similar to Swing. I'm amazed at the idea that anyone, experienced or not, could complete the work in 40-60 hours.
