I got my RMI server working great. I just slightly adapted the code that I found in "Java Annotated Archives" by Naba Barkakati et al.
Now I am fumbling through this group, and I find that people are talking about a "permission file" and it seems related to RMI.
What is it? Do I need it? Will I fail if I don't have one? Or is
sort of something that I don't really have any use for ... like my appendix or my mother and law?
Where can I get more information?

There is a default policy file resides in Jdk and it handles all the access. But if u explicitly provide a policy file it will be more appreciated.

What is the syntax of this permission file? Where can I find documentation on it?

Here. This document is part of the normal JDK documentation (Guide to Features => Security and Signed Applets => Policy Permissions).
You don't strictly need it for the project unless you use RMI's automatic downloading of stub classes.
