Well, I took the essay exam part of my SCJD exam last nite. Here are my impressions.
First, it was not quite the "blow off" test that I had expected. I kept reading "if you did your own work" you should have no problem. Well, I did my own work and had difficulty with one of my five question anyways. I would have had difficulty with three of the five, had people not posted a question on this group.
This is IMHO the definitive way to prepare for the essay test. Basically you should be able to explain in detail anything that the instructions specifically talk about. For example:
1) RMI vs Sockets. Advantages of each. which did you use.
2) Did you extend or modify data class and why?
3) How did you handle local vs. server mode?
4) Explain your lock/unlock methods
5) Explain your criteriaSearch methods
6) Answer a question about your GUI interface in your program (how to book a flight, how many buttons, etc.)
7) Be able to answer questions about command line arguments in your program
8) Since they tell you to use Swing and JTable, you might get asked questons about them such as did you extend those classes?
9) I can see them asking you the names of any JAR files in your submission or how to run your program.
So, definitely many of the questions above cannot be answered by you unless you did your own work. It might also be trivial to prepare for the above questions. However, it is also possible to not remember specific details in your code after you worked on it for several months. It is unpleasant to get asked such a question on the essay exam. I think the list above will pretty much tell you everything you need to know to prepare for the exam.
Good Luck! I'll let you all know how I did!

Enrico,
Actually I don't think I gave away too much, but just to be safe I edited out some stuff. Hey, the *LAST* thing i need is a fortune 500 company mad at me!
All of what I posted has been posted by others and/or is my best guess from what I saw.
I do believe it would be very difficult (impossible) to pass the test without having written your own program, but you also really need to know your code quite well. This makes it a disadvantage for people who worked on the project for several months. You will honestly forget some of the details.
Good Luck

Thanks a lot Donald!
I decided to take the test as soon as possible after finishing the code for reasons you're mention.
Hope you'll make!
Enrico
