You can not see that information because it is restricted to the administrators. Many folks do not really like their IP made public, so it is restricted.
Any time that you access a web site (any web site), the IP that you are using is available for the site to track. Mostly this is done for tracking things like "what part of the world do most of our users come from" and etc.
Of course at one time we had a group of kids in some school that thought that it would be fun to post pornography to JavaRanch All over the place < sigh >. The IP allowed us to contact the Network Adminstrator of the school - who seemed to take care of the problem .
