Hi,
I am preparing for the developer exam and wish to read a book while taking up the exam. "The Sun Certified Java Developer Exam with J2SE 1.4 by Habbibi" is little over my budget. Can you suggest me any other book ?

Well Rajesh, unfortunately all the books are in that price range. However, if it is free you want, the only reading you will ever need is all here at Javaranch in this forum.
You don't have to read any books at all for the SCJD, since it is an assignment.
There is also a Dallas SCJD Users group web site that can also be helpful. But I much prefer here.

Hi Rajesh,
Javaranch is a excellent site, and I think you'll definitely find it useful. However, you might also find that my book is useful to you . If you don't mind me asking, where are you purchasing it from? I believe that bookpool and Amazon are offering it for about $30.
All best,

Hi Piyush,
For DesignPatterns do you already have the GoF book ? GoF Book
This is always a good reference book to have in your bookshelf
Also, what I used personnally (although I also have the GoF book), was this excellent book from Steven Metsker, that sort of 'translates' the GoF book for Java developers (or soon to be) like us.
Design Patterns Java Workbook
My advice if you can afford both, is to read entirely the one from Metsker for your assignment. He explains very well the different patterns from the GoF, together with JAVA examples.
Hope this helps
Stephane

Most appear to take around 100 hours (two to three weeks), although experienced developers can do it in as little as a week. There are no time limits.

Max,
"The Sun Certified Java Developer Exam with J2SE 1.4" is possibly the only book in its class for this exam. I am from India. This book(imported) is available in few book stores here for Rs.2500+. Usually all important books has an 'Indian Low price edition' which is licensed from the original publisher and printed in India. Book shops are waiting for this edition. But I have to finish my assignment before the end of this year!!!
As per your suggestion, I am using the archives of this forum.
Thanks,
Rajesh
