I believe there was an earlier post, dated June, 2001, concerning the issue of a java.rmi.ConnectionException on Linux boxes. I was using RH 8.0 as the RMI server with Windows 2K for the client, and I got the same kind of exception:

Has anybody managed to pinpoint the issue with this? I'm just curious to know since I believe my code had worked before on another Linux box, but don't know which RH version.

Are you using a policy file or codebase? If yes, try to run your program without specifying the policy file and without using any SecurityManager in your code.

Thank you for the swift reply. Guess what? I figured it out after a few minutes of online investigative work. It's amazing how fickle Linux is! I had to remove an alias from my /etc/hosts file for 127.0.0.1. That was it!
