Max,Mark,
If one has passed the SCJD ,can one then upgrade directly to the NX version ?
That is , without going through SCJP again .
There is a lot of interesting stuff coming through on the NX posts.

If you passed the SCJP already, it's not necessary to upgrade your scjp, you could apply the newest version of scjd.

Thanks frank.
Isn't there a distinction then between the old and new ?
The requirement to prefixing with a NX seems to suggest there is.
Also there seems to be more Webby stuff in it.

I think the biggest difference is you don't get any prewritten code. Just the DB access interface method signatures on paper. You gotta do all the coding yourself with a choice of RMI or sockets.
You may get one of two business domains to implement: home contractors or hotel room booking, but they are pretty well analogs of each other.

They seem analogeous, but reading the postings here I feel the hotel room booking assignment a little bit more difficult, because I am missing the "time-complication" in the home contractors booking assignment (that is what I have). Or do I overlook something?

I think this is the major value in having the "NX:" prefix on subject lines - it stops people from answering a question with "look at how the supplied code handles it".
Apart from that, most (if not all) the issues in the old and new assignments are the same, and people doing the old assignment answer questions on the new assignment and vice versa.
The marking criteria for the new assignment has changed too, although you still need an 80% pass mark. Some areas have been given greater emphasis (and some have had emphasis reduced (such as GUI design)), and the overall possible marks you can get has shot up to 400 (going to look weird when newcommers look for past posts and see people passing with 135 ). I think this means that the marking is going to be more consistant, but it could also mean that it will be tougher to pass.
Regards, Andrew

Yikes! By that much ! That's a good indication that this is practically a new exam.
Which still leaves the question unanswered .
Can one upgrade from the old SCJD to the new one ?
And thanks for the replies.

Anyone,
By upgrade , I mean paying the upgrade fee of $70 or the equivalent and receiving the new assignment with the new criteria ?

Obviously , you'd have to pass the old version first.
Or is this too simple a process.....

I am pretty sure they will give you an upgrade discount of some sort, but not sure how much. You would have to ask Sun about that.

Thanks Mark,
Just wondered whether anyone had actually done it via an upgrade rather than through the SCJP route.
I will contact Sun about this.

Once again, got the answer from this site.

old for new
Didn't have to contact Sun - saved myself a few weeks.
