How much time is left to take scjd 1.4?

I haven't taken the scjp 1.4 test yet (planned for August 03) and I'm probably getting ahead of myself, but I read somewhere that you only have 18 months after the initial release of the version of the jdk matching the exam to finish it (scjd 1.4).
Is this true?

The 1.4 assignment was just released not just two months ago, and the previous assignment was out for at least three years. So I don't think there is any time limit at all. And they are still accepting the older assignments.
Since there is no time limit currently on any SCJD assignment. On how long it takes you to complete the assignment, then there is no time limit based on production version of the SDK.

The 18 months limit is something a little different. From my assignment:
You may develop your code using any implementation of the Java 2 platform, but the submission that you return must have been tested and shown to work under a production (not development) version of the Sun Microsystems' Java 2 platform and that platform must not have been superseded by a new production version for more than 18 months by the time you make your submission.

So - let's say SDK 1.4.0 was officially released on August 1, 2002. (Because I'm too lazy to find the correct date.) This would mean that for their assignment, people can still use the preceeding release SDK 1.3.1 up until Feb 1, 2004. If they turn in their assignment after that, well, make sure it works for JDK 1.4.0 at least. If you want to wait until Jan 1, 2008 for some reason, you can probably do that (if Sun certification still exists) with the same assignment - but you might have to make sure it can run on SDK 1.8 or something. Not a big deal - Sun just doesn't want to have to track down every every possible JDK that's ever been released in order to grade your assignment.

That sounds reasonable.

Hi Jim! Long time no talk to!
I'm actually studying for my SCWCD right now, but I have a SCJD project almost completed for about 2 years now (just haven't done the javadocs ). If I recompile in 1.4, I have no problem submitting it?
Thanks,
Paul

Paul, if you recompile in 1.4 and it all works that is fine. You can submit the older version with SDK 1.4 since 1.4 is in production. You can also still use SDK 1.3.
