Hello All,
This may be a dumb question, but I will ask anyway. What do think about displaying the Record Numbers in the JTable GUI interface? Thing is: record numbers are the sort of pseudo-keys for the room records displayed in the tabular window. These need to be sent back to the server along with the customer Id number while booking a room. Plus, they are nice unique identifiers to reposition the selection bar on the same record when the display is refreshed as Max does in his book?
Any thoughts/comments are welcome.
Regards.
Bharat

Hi Bharat,
I am not sure what this will give you.
I think in Max's case, the unique identifier was the UPC number. Which is unique for the DVD. So a customer could reasonably expect that the DVD for a particular UPC number will not change.
Whereas the record number does not give the same sorts of guarantees. A person could look at record # 5 today. Later it could be deleted, and a new record added (which, if it reuses space could end up in position 5), and so they could get a totally different result in record 5 tomorrow.
Regards, Andrew

Hello Andrew,
You just convinced me, it is a bad idea. I was hoping to get the record number for my (programmer's) convenience. So that I could send the selected record number along with the owner's (customer) 8 digit Id. Instead, what I can do is just hide the record number column in the JTable display. I could probably add it to the end to right side of the ownwer column which is the last column in my tabluar display and hide it. Anyway, that was my hidden motivation. From your reaction, I might be opening up a can of "worms" by displaying it my UI.
Thanks.
Bharat
