Hi,
2 years ago I took the Java Programmer 2 (1.2) exam. As I found out, there is a new programmer exam with 1.4. Can I take the developer exam or do I have to repeat the programmer exam???
Thanks
Cristin

You do NOT have to pass the 1.4 upgrade exam to proceed with other certifications. You only need to have passed one of the programmer exams. I also am a SCJP 1.2, and am currently working towards my developer certification.
There are probably many different opinions out there on whether or not one should upgrade their programmer certification before taking any of the other exams. I am of the opinion that proceeding on get other certifications will help me more than upgrading my programmer certification. (both because of the learning and also the additional certifications).
Good luck in whatever you decide!

Thanks to both you for your reply.
Terry one question, was the SCWCD more difficult than the programmer exam to pass? That is also a certification I want to complete.
Cheers

SCJP focus on the understanding of the fundemental of Java.
So, Qs are related to whether the code is compiled, can some methods be overloaded, can some objects be casted, etc.
SCWCD focus on how well you know about the API of Servlet 2.0 and JSP 1.2.
Most Qs are related to which API I should use to redirect the request, which interface should I implement in order to make instance variables be thread safe, what is the structure of the deployment descriptor, etc.
IMO, SCWCD need a lot of memerization.

In my opinion, SCWCD was WAY easier than the programmer exam. I do have JSP/J2EE experience though and that helped me out a bit. Lot's of memorization as Nicholas states above, but if you happen to be lucky enough to be working with some if it, it's not so bad.
The difficulty of SCWCD could be changing soon though since a new exam is coming out early next year. See this thread where towards the end of the postings I describe my approach to the SCWCD exam.
Good luck.
