Do I have to tell the examiner to run rmiregistry first?

Have a look at java.rmi.LocateRegistry.createRegistry() method
Thats like running rmiregistry but, from inside your application

Here is one other thread to look at that talks about starting the registry programmatically - it explains how if you do it this way, you don't need a security manager or policy file.
