Hello everyone,
I am so glad I stumbled accross this forum, I was beginning to think I would never know the answers to my questions.
I have just downloaded my developers exam, which I think is the new one. It is about Bodgitt and Scarper. Anyway my problem is, there are other people at my work who are also doing the developers exam, and they are writing a data convertion tool.
Nowhere in my exam does it say anything about a data convertion tool, even when I read between the lines, and none of them will look at my assignement spec, nor let me look at theirs, so I can then see how they decided they needed a data convertion tool, and why I don't.
I don't want to start, then to find out I needed one.
My second question is, the database file I have been given, does not appear to be much of a database file. Do I take it that I read from this file with some sort of RandomAccessFile reader?
I hope you can answer my questions, even if they are a little basic.
Gillian

Hello and welcome, Gillian !
I am sure other developers will be able to give you more detailed response to your questions but just to give you quick answers this is what I know about the point you brought up.
1. Conversion tool was required for previous versions of assignment. If your specs does not mention anything about it then you do not need it at all.
2. Database file is not a relational one. Your specs may indicate the format of the content of your file, DataInputStream and DataOutputStream, for example. These can give you hints you about RandomAccessFile.
Regards,
Seid

Gillian,
To add to what Seid mentioned, he is totally correct on number 1, if
your instructions do not mentioned a data conversion tool don't worry about
it. For number two most use a RandomAccessFile to read in the data
or NIO, or a combination of both. I suggest you go and search the past threads in this forum for and RandomAccessFile, you will find endless conversations regarding the pros and cons of both. I found RandomAccessFile easier and I know someone who used RandomAccessFile throughout their project and scored very very very
high (the highest score I have ever seen actually).
Hope this helps, bill

I meant to say search the past threads in this forum for NIO and RandomAccessFile.

Gillian - Here is one thread in particular that may help: another convert tool question thread
