Hi Maria,

You can do a search for "Max book" in this forum to see what people have said about this book. That's Max Habibi's The Sun Certified Java Developer Exam with J2SE 1.4. I think it's a must have unless you have a lot of Java experience, and even then it doesn't hurt. The bunkhouse has lots of reviews on other books but I don't think there's even a distant second choice. Books that cover both the SCJP and the SCJD do a pretty superficial job on the SCJD. I can't recommend buying the Alain Trottier book (there are some good ideas in there, but there are also some bad ideas, I object to paying for bad ideas since I seem to be able to generate plenty of those on my own without help). I think there's a SCJD FAQ link at the top of this page.
Anyway, welcome to the forum. You've definitely found the right place.
Hope this helps,
George
P.S. Also take a look at the SCJD entries in the Certfication Results forum. People who have passed are often willing to say what they found helpful and since they have passed they are probably worth listening to more than me (I've just taken the test and am impatiently waiting for the results).

Hi Maria,
Welcome to JavaRanch.
George has already given a lot of good information. Here is the link to "Max's book" which is definately the best book I have seen for SCJD. And here is the link to the JavaRanch SCJD links & FAQ page.
Sorry, I don't know of any free mock tests. To be honest I doubt that there are any. The SCJD certification consists of an assignment which must be graded by a person, and a small test (4 questions only) which prove that you wrote your submission. As such, any "mock" would have to have an assignment attached, and a human grader to look at it.
One such mock assignment is Softlearn's SoftSCJD. I know several members of this forum have used it, but I have not heard any comments good or bad about it yet. (They get special mention because they are being patient waiting for me to add their product to our FAQ page - next week I hope).
Regards, Andrew
