I see some good posts about the project, but I am not following, and I hope its because I havent bought the instructions yet.
Any books or websites to show a good design?
Also, how long does it take to work on? How much for design, and how much for implementation? Do you need to supply any UML diagrams? Are you given UML diagrams?

You can check out the FAQ and Reading Materials on top of SCJD forum. There you can have links to books to follow and other useful websites.

a. It is a common notion that it takes approximately 3-6 months for those who are doing jobs.
b. There is no need to supply any UML diagrams.
c. No UML diagrams are provided. All they give is an instruction document and a db file.

Hope this helps.

Hi Jay,

Any books or websites to show a good design?

I highly recommend Max's book: SCJD with J2SE 1.4 and Kathy & Bert's SCJP & SCJD.

how long does it take to work on?

I think usually people use 2-4 months, but I used around 1 month to finish it as I have 4 years J2EE and 1 year OOAD experiences.

How much for design, and how much for implementation?

I used 1 week to understand the instructions and draft the design, 2 weeks for implementations, 1 week for testing and documentation.

Do you need to supply any UML diagrams?

NO. But I have also worked that out. I did this exam by traditional OOAD practices, write use cases, class diagram, sequence/state diagram, etc.
Besides the SCJD exam, I take it as a small project for work. I feel this is a good chance for us to learn how to design, rather than how to code and test. I follow this apporach, as what Andrew recommended.

Are you given UML diagrams?

No. SUN provides a 9-page instturctions in HTML fomrat, and a database file.
Hope this help.
Nick.

Hi Jay,
Any books or websites to show a good design?

The Sun Certified Java Developer Exam with J2SE 1.4 (Max Habibi's book) is the "must" book for preparing SCJD. Not only it is wellknown as the best book on the topic, but many many people on this forum have their own copy of it. So in case you'd have any question while reading it, you'll find here people able to answer them (and often even Max (the author) himself ).
Maybe you prepared SCJP with Sun Certified Programmer & Developer for Java 2: Study Guide (Exam 310-035), a Kathy Sierra's book. It has a (small) section on SCJD which is very helpful too.
In this thread, I wrote a post about Max's book. More interesting is Kathy Sierra's post on the topic, just after mine.
Here is one more thread on the same topic.
Regards,
Phil.
