Hi, I'm working through examcram2 SCJD book, and am wondering how closely I can follow their code samples and document layout suggestions without getting having problems when I upload the assignment to Sun?
The assignment that Alain Trottier uses in the book does not match the assignment you have been given by Sun (a deliberate choice that all the authors of such books make). Therefore you cannot use the code directly - you must adapt it to your assignment.
And that means that you should be safe following the code samples and document layout suggestions, as you will not be exact copies - you will be submitting adaptions.
You should be aware that Alain Trottier wrote his book based on the Fly By Night Services assignment intructions. Some of the requirements have since changed, so you must follow your instructions, whenever your instructions and Alain's book differ. For example, he suggests that some documents can be provided in Microsoft Word format (which was possible in the Fly By Night Services assignment, but is strictly forbidden in the new assignments).
You also need to be aware that there are some problems with that particular book. For example his suggested locking code is faulty, and his suggested thread safe code is not thread safe. So do not blindly follow his examples, but work out for yourself whether what he is suggesting is correct and whether it meets your requirements.
However one of the nice things about this book is that it does provide a lot of good information on being a good developer (instead of just being a programmer). And it definately presents a nice simple solution rather than the overcomplicated solutions that we often see described here.
I'm also a newbie about to take the assignment exam. I've read this book but not the other one referred to on this forum (The Sun Certified Java Developer Exam with J2SE 1.4, by Mehran (Max) Habibi). How do they compare? Is it worthwhile reading Habibi's book or is it mostly the same stuff?
I do not know about the examcram2 book. But I have read and following Max's book.(Mehran Habibi). It is a good book and has a sample demo application that contains most of the issues/subject that the SCJD assignment covers. The author is also a moderator here in this forum and answers questions occasionally.
Like Simon, I have read both books. And, again like Simon, I think that Max's book is by far the superior book.
However individual's reading likes and dislikes differ. So if you have the chance, you might want to go to a bookstore that has both books, and spend half an hour reading comparable topics and see which book suits you best.
Try Bookware (http://bookware.com.au - 99 Walker Street, North Sydney). You may have to ring them up and ask them if it is in stock. When I bought my copy, they had several on the shelf.
I do not know if they have more computer books than any other shop in Sydney (it is hard to tell because they are crammed into a very small area whereas other shops are more spread out) but I have yet to find a computer book in any other shop that they dont have, and they frequently have books the others don't have. They are usually cheaper too. And if you are physically in the store and ask for the online discount, then they will give it to you .
Whereabouts in Sydney are you? I am enjoying living in Randwick at the moment.
Yes I did order it from Bookware. Actually I went to the Hotline Books website and it was redirected there. They said they'll have it inside a week. Nobody else had it, or would take 6 weeks to get it.
BTW I am in Hornsby. Are you a Sydney native or just visiting? I'm a local (except for a 3 yr stint in Canberra). Maybe we can catch up for a beer...
