Can anyone tell me if I have this right?

default mode(no flag): Client runs expecting to connect via network.

"server" flag: Server runs expecting connections via network only.

"standalone" flag: Client and server both run in non-networked mode.

Yes that is correct

though perhaps your use of the word server in case 3 is a little suspect.

I don't really want to get into the debate of what sun means by server, but in my mind the server basically is the network code, the database is totally separate.

Hi Matt,

You're correct for the two first modes you listed above.
As far as the alone mode is concerned, I'd say that GUI code, the business code and the DBAccess code run all together in a single JVM, without any network code involved (even in loop-back).
