Hi guys,

Just downloaded my assignment, and I need a starting point! I've read the developer part of "Java 2, Sun certified Programmer and Developer", but there doesnt seem to be much there, so I bought Max Habibi's book (on the way in the post!). Could any of you give me start up guidance please... how should I approach the whole thing, should I divide it into GUI, DB, RMI or what? I don't know anything about Swing neither RMI. If you were me what would you do and how would you plan it out?

Appreciated in Advance...

P.S. Are regular expressions allowed ? :-S

I started by taking the assignment specification and high lighting ever sentence that contains the word "must". This provided the basic requirements for the project.

Next I took the DBAccess interface and built a Data class that implemented it and a DatabaseFile class that provided the low level file access code. With these in place I built a command line program that tested the database access.

You can do all this before Max's book arrives. When it arrives you should study it and download his examples. You might also want to get a copy of the O'Reilly "Java Swing" book, if you aren't familiar with swing.

I think you can use regular expressions, but you won't really need them.
