Hi all
Hey i wanna ask a general question regarding the assignment..
I intend to download the assignment early next year due to lack funds.. I just got a book The Complete Java 2 Certification guide by Simon Roberts, is this a good book? Even though it covers the jdk 1.2 platform and i also intend to get either Katty's book or Max's book or even both, but i wanna get a book! My questions are as follows:
1) What are the sample codes sent by SUN, are u supposed to use them or just use 'em as a guide to what u wanna do?

2) The "database schema": this really confuses me! If there aint JDBC how do u create a database and how does the schems thing apply to it! I know a schema is how to interact with the database... pls clarify me on this..

3)Are u to build the server from scrath or does it vary from candidate to candidate...

.... Well i guess these are the questions that really bothers me right now.. i now if i got the right books my question wuld be answered... but i also want some answers from people working on their own assignment NOW! Thanks a lot guys, i am looking forward to pursing my SCJD soon as well.....
Saheed.

I would recommend getting Max's book. It explains everything you need to know, and has a complete sample project.

1) What are the sample codes sent by SUN, are u supposed to use them or just use 'em as a guide to what u wanna do?

Sun specified an interface with contracts for find, read, update, lock, unlock, delete. That's the only code.

2) The "database schema": this really confuses me! If there aint JDBC how do u create a database and how does the schems thing apply to it! I know a schema is how to interact with the database... pls clarify me on this..

Sun provides a data file. The file have two main section schema and data. You have to read schema and interpret data according to schema. Isn't that interesting?

3)Are u to build the server from scrath or does it vary from candidate to candidate...

From scratch.

My opinion: download the assignment. You have a lifetime to update and enroll for essay exam. Because there is no due date on uploading.

I used the Simon Roberts book. I thought it was particular good for the SCJP exam, but it was also useful for the SCJD exam.
It shows code examples of a bunch of design choices you could make: sockets, RMI, RMI using activation, thread manager, schema's, etc.
As I used RMI I did not need the the sockets and thread manager code, but at least I could see how such an approach would work and explain the advantages and disadvantages of my choice on the essay exam.
It also has the best explanation I've ever seen about layout managers.
I have never read Max's book.
