Hi all
I havent yet downloaded my assignment but from all i have read and heard! The DB is a binary file or is ASCII(i need clarification)! For now i do know that u use RandomAccess API I/O to read in data and save data(there's even a sample program in Deitel's How to program 5th Edition)! My question is, What exactly is the converter( I even hear there's no longer a converter!)
Well i am generally confused about the database part(the file..)! I would need good and clear cut explanations from fellow Java Developers! Thanks.
Saheed.

Its difficult for us to provide advice until after you have downloaded your assignment. The assignments vary quite a bit.

The file is a flat binary file, it contains characters stored in Ascii encoding. You will need to read the records as bytes and convert the byte arrays to Strings. The format of the file will be difined in the first part of the file, according to a description found in your instructions. The data in this part of the file will consist of integers and byte arrays.

Hi Saheed,

There are several different assignments, and multiple versions of these assignments (take a look at the question "How may assignments are there?" in the JavaRanch SCJD FAQ for some information on this).

The converter program was used in a much earlier version of one of the assignments that no longer appears to be in use. So you should not need to worry about it.

Regards, Andrew
