I bought the SCJD assignment in June of 2003, but never got around to doing it. Does anyone know whether SCJD has changed in anyway (eg. is Java 1.5 being used for their more recent assignments, is NIO now allowed etc).

Hi Karen,

The current format of assignments have been in effect since around April - May 2003, so chances are good that you have one of the latest assignments.

If you have the assignement for the "Fly By Night" airline reservation, then you will have the old assignment.

If you have one of the "URLy Bird" hotel reservation or "Bodgitt & Scarper" building contractor reservation system, then you will have one of the new assignments.

Regardless, all assignments are "current" and can still be worked on. So if you have the old assignment you can still work on it and still submit it. (If you do have the old assignment, you might want to see if you can download the assignment again - some of us found that when we did we received a new assignment, and we were then allowed to choose which assignment we wanted to work on ).

If the instructions you downloaded tell you that you may not use NIO, then you must not use it. If your instructions do not mention NIO then you are free to use it.

From the instructions: "[You may use any] production (not development) version of the Sun Microsystems' Java 2 platform and that platform must not have been superseded by a new production version for more than 18 months by the time you make your submission". In other words, you may use JDK 1.5 if you wish, or you can use JDK 1.4. You should not be using JDK 1.3 any more.

You might want to look for other related questions in the JavaRanch SCJD FAQ.

Regards, Andrew

Are you sure about this, because it says i can't use it where I downloaded the assignment, but not in my assignment:

Hi Josh,

Several people have asked Sun explicitly about the use of NIO, and you can read two of the responses here.
