Hi,

I am going to graduate from university next april, and currently working on my SCJD assignment. I searched on a couple of job web sites (monster.ca) and didn't see many jobs looking for SCJDs. This makes me wonder how valuable SCJD is in the market and how useful it can be to new grads seeking fulltime positions. Can anyone provide some insight and thought on this.

Thank you.

Although companies might not specifically mention it in their ads, doesn't mean they don't consider it to be a big advantage. You don't see many ads mentioning a PhD from an Ivy League school, but I guess that wouldn't do you any harm either

The company I work for insisted I take the SCJP (after hiring me), and I volunteered to do the SCJD afterwards if they pay for it (which they agreed to) - so they obviously consider it very worthwhile

Cheers,
Dan

Hi, and welcome to JavaRanch!

Dan is correct. You won't find any job postings lookings specifically for a SCJD. However, if an employer sees a SCJD certification on your resume, it will tell them that you are able to function at a level consistant with the standards that Sun promotes.

In the competitive world of Java, it will definately be an ace in the hole for you when it comes to looking for employment, but don't expect a job to be handed to you just because you are certified.

Also, you may want to change your name to abide by the Java Ranch Naming Policy.

For my mind, the experience you get from doing SCJD is really invaluable. If you take your time, consider different possible solutions for each area, read and take part in this forum, then you'll definitely become a better developer for it.

Plus at the end of it you get to have the SUN Logo on your resume/CV!

Hi all,

Thanks so much for your great replies. Even though I have been working on SCJD for a only week, I am really enjoying the experience and this forum! I am just hoping that a potential employer would take my certification into account when some other grad has a higher average than me.

Thanks again guys and have fun.

Now back to work....(after I change my display name)

I had one interview where the interviewer was not aware of the various Sun certs, only that Sun had certs. To him, SCJP and SCJD were one and the same. By explaining the difference, I not only helped him, but I also got a job offer!
