I would like to take SCJD assignment, but as I don't have any experience I'd like to first get a feel of the assignment to get an idea before I take the real assignment. I'm not sure if any book introduces all the topics required to complete the real assignment( like RMI, sockets, design patterns... etc). The above site says it gives all the required info( and some extras like check points, mock essay tests...etc)
Please share your experiences with the above (or any other mock).
I am currently working on the SCJD assignment. The Habibi, Patterson, Camerlengo book is exactly what you need and covers the locking, design patterns, RMI, and Swing you will need for the SCJD. They also provide a project called Denny's DVD with full code that greatly simplifies completion of the SCJD. (It is almost too similar)
With this book it is possible to complete the SCJD in a few weeks to a couple months depending on your background. Without it, you would need to research each topic independently and this would take much longer.
I would order the book and if you really want the SCJD, order the exam and begin working on it.

Thanks a lot Jack Gold. You gave me the encouragement that I desparately needed to start SCJD. I tried searching the results forum, this scjd forum for that kind of info, but yours is truly useful for me. Thank you. I'l order the book today. Do you have any suggestion about what to do in the mean time( say 3,4 days to get the book delivered). I started reading sun's RMI tutorial( http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/rmi/overview.html), I feel it's really good.
I agree with Jack that The Sun Certified Java Developer Exam with J2SE 1.4 (Max's book) is a great resource for the SCJD assignment, and the best book I have seen for covering all the topics required.
While waiting for the book, you might want to look at the JavaRanch SCJD Reading Material FAQ? There are several tutorials and whitepapers you could go through while waiting for your copy of Max's book.
Once you have Max's book, you may find that you no longer have any need to look at any of these tutorials. Just keep them in the back of your mind in case you want further information at some stage.
Can anyone tell me what is the last word on page 101 of the book, "Sun Certified Java Developer Exam with J2SE 1.4" please? I am on a business trip for 3 months and I didn't know it can be that boring here. I left my book at home and would like to d/l the source code to start my study.
