Hello all,

This is my first post here, so I guess really I just wanted to introduce myself to you all. I passed my SCJP last December and have decided to go for the SCJD exam also. I don't have a huge amount of commercial development experience (around 6 months), but I am hoping that I will be ok for this assignment. Of course I have bought some books to help me. I have been given the URLyBird assignment.

Anyhow a friend recommended these forums to me so I hope to have an enjoyable stay where we can help each other out. Any early advice would be welcome

Hi Steve,

Welcome to JavaRanch and this forum.

I think the only early advice I would give anybody is that I think the assignments should be taken as a chance to experiment with new things. In real life you normally get given a job to do and a limited time to do it, so you don't get to experiment with different technologies. But the SCJD assignment has no time-frame limitiations, and few technology limitations. So when you see that you have choices in how to implement some feature - don't just pick one based on some theoretical comments: go and experiment with the various choices so you can see for yourself how it all works.

I realize, of course, that this advice doesn't always apply: there are forum members past and present who have given themselves time limits (because of work / school / personal life / ...). But where it does - utilize it to the fullest.

And enjoy yourself.

Regards, Andrew
