Hi Irene,

There is no time limit on the assignment itself.

You can still use JDK 1.4 until 18 months after JDK 5 was released - so up until March 29, 2006. After this date you must test that your code compiles and runs on JDK 5 before you submit it.

Once JDK 6 is released the same rules will apply to - you will have 18 months where you can ignore JDK 6 if you want to, after which you will have to prove that your code works with JDK 6. And so on with the future releases.

Having said that, the SCJD assignment provides a good opportunity to explore JDK 5 and it's new features. Why not start playing around with it now?

Hi there ...
i'm not well familiar yet with jdk1.5 , but as for last reply ,he said that we must test if jdk1.4 program runs also in 1.5 after 18 months , but i think that once it run in 1.4 , it should also works in 1.5 ... am i right ???

Hi Hassan,

Code written with earlier versions of the JDK should be compilable and runnable under later versions. However it is not guaranteed.

The most common way for code to break is when newer versions of the JDK introduce new keywords that you had previously been using as non-keywords (e.g. variable names). For example JDK 1.4 introduced the keyword assert and JDK 5 introduces the keyword enum.

So, while it is expected that the rule that your code be tested on a current JDK should not cause any problems, you must still perform the tests.
