According to my instructions regarding the user interface:

"It must be composed exclusively with components from the Java Foundation Classes (Swing components)."

I'm wondering if this precludes me using the layouts in AWT packages.

Hi Keith - no it doesn't preclude you from using the AWT Layouts. If you check the sun site for APIs relevant to the assignment, it says:

Swing (and AWT to the extent necessary to support Swing). Since Swing doesn't have direct replacements for the AWT layout managers, you can use them.
 
Don't get me started about those stupid light bulbs.
