Why java ranch uses cgi-bin if it is meant to be a guidline site for java lovers? Why the shop keeper is not using the products which he wants to sell?
The "shopkeeper" doesn't sell Java products. We use UBB because it is the best product out there. The only decent Java based forum software is Jive but it lacks all the features we need. We have investigated it and even ran a pilot.
I said that UBB is the best product out there but that isn't quite true. the best product is probably phpBB which is a borad written in PHP. It is amazingly full featured and best of all it is free.
Wow, I just took a look at phpBB. It does seem rather nice. Especially for something that is free. I don't know how much the current UBB is running our wonderful site owner, or even if it is free. Maybe Javaranch should start looking at possbily converting to something like that? I would volenteer some time for it if need be. BTW - Their code block are NICE!! If anyone wants to look at an example of this in action, the phpBB site has it's own community forum using it's own software. [ February 16, 2003: Message edited by: Gregg Bolinger ]
I set up and ran a phpBB board for somebody once. I thought it was a nice piece of software, easty to set-up, easy to use. It was version 1.2 or something, but I see from their site they finally got version 2 out the door. I don't remember how fast it was, I don't think it was blindingly fast though. There's also a new version of UBB in PHP, UBB Threads.
I'm using phpBB for my Forums (Link in Signature). We love it. Seems fast (some depends on your hosting company). I had it installed and running in 5 minutes. And that includes the download and upload time from them to my server. Everyone can check it out.
It wasn't my idea to go to some crazy nightclub in the middle of nowhere. I just wanted to stay home and cuddle with this tiny ad:
