In the instructions, It says we must test the code under a production version of the Sun Microsystems' Java 2 platform and that platform must not have been superseded by a new production version for more than 18 months by the time you make the submission. So like the subject, Can I use a Beta or Alpha realease in this case? Is Beta or Aplha relaese the prodection version? Thanks!

no, they are not.
The 18 months limit for 1.5 starts the day 1.6 is officially released (which hasn't happened yet, despite all the announcements that it was supposed to happen).

There's no reason to not use Alpha/Beta releases during development - provided that your final build, test, and submission takes place based on a production release. So if you have time why not?

However, I would check Sun's site first just in case that they put a definite no-no on using features of a new release (unlikely for old assignments).
