Hello everyone,

I'm about halfway through the db implementation, and just a couple days ago bought the Monkhouse book. There's not a great deal in the book that I feel is enlightening to me, but I did find one bit of code (the recordFileReader) that I feel is more elegant, compact, and easier to read than my implementation. So, I would like to use this code in my assignment. Will I be graded down, or automatically failed, if I use this code?

That is a very nice bit of coding, and I am indebted to Jim Yingst for it.

You cannot use somebody else's code in your assignment, however that is not a problem in this case - you cannot use that code exactly as it is written: you will have to understand what it does, then adapt it as necessary to fit your assignment.

This is one of the reasons why we deliberately changed our data file format from that used in the real assignments. We don't have to worry about the meta-data, or the header, or the deleted flag. You will have to handle all this, and so even if you do use a custom tailored version of that elegant bit of code, it will only be part of your overall solution. As such it will be your code at that point.

Which is kind of a long way of saying that you will be fine: you can use that snippet without loosing marks or failing as a result.

Regards, Andrew

yeah I have done something similar with lot of customization top of Andrew's code. Now I can say that it is my code after so many changes but outline is still from Andrew's book.
