"Sun Certified Programmer & Developer for Java 2 Study Guide" by Kathy Sierra and Bert Bates is the best book on both exams. The SCJD is a practical project with an essay exam based on the project.

Here are the reviews: http://www.amazon.com/review/product/B000SEGIIG/ref=dp_top_cm_cr_acr_txt?%5Fencoding=UTF8&showViewpoints=1

Otherwise the javaranch provides the best place for tips on the SCJD. Go here:http://www.coderanch.com/forums/f-25/java-developer-SCJD

I heartily reccommend Andrew Monkhouse and Terry Camerlengo 's SCJD Exam with J2SE 5 (2nd Ed). It is published by Apress.

There is good coverage of all of the main topics (threading, GUI design, database, and RMI v. sockets). They work through an example that is similar enough to be useful, without being so close as to feel like you're cheating.
