The "exam" is actually an assignment. You download a spec, and build an application. It includes a multithreaded database, a server using RMI or sockets, a client to connect to the server, and a GUI. Once you are hapy with your application, you upload it and it is scored according to whether it meets the spec, and then for everything: threading/locking, object-orientation, through javadoc and formatting of the source code. You also have to submit: javadoc, a user guide, and a "choices" document, that describes what alternatives you considered and what reason you had for the choices that you made.

After you upload the application, you take the second part. This is an essay test (4-5 questions from what I've heard--I got 4). These ask you about aspects of your design. What choice did you make, what alternatives did you consider. The essay test is supposed have 2 goals: 1) to help them be sure that you actually wrote the code you uploaded, and 2) that you know what you are doing--you considered the decisions you made, considered alternatives, and had reasons for what you did.

In my opinon, the best book is "SCJD exam with J2SE 5", by Andrew Monkhouse and Terry Camerlengo, published by Apress.

It is a long process, but I found the journey well worth it. I learned a bunch (even about things I thought I knew well), and several of the habits I acquired have spilled over to my group at work.

I hope that helps.
