Hi all,

I have not used any mnemonics in my implementation of the GUI, will I lose marks for this?

I did not see much value mnemonics could add given the basic GUI and plan on justifying this in my choices.txt.. but could I still lose marks?

thanks,

James

Depends on your justification in choices. What did you say to justify it?

Maybe you thought of some things I haven't thought of, but I don't see what's the problem with mnemonics. It is not at all a lot of work, and it is so basic that I can't see how it could cost you points.
And look at it from this way: how is the user going to operate your program without a mouse? There seem to be some systems working without mouse, and most windows programs are also operatable without a mouse. Mnemonics help a lot in such a case.

Hi,

To be honest exactly what is involved in mnemonics!!

Currently in my gui its possible to move from one field to another using the
"Tab" button is this considered a mnemonic?

The additional mnemonic I was thinking of was if the user clicks Control-A then the dialog to add room comes up, Control-B brings up the dialog to book a room etc.. I have not added this and was wondering if I will lose marks if I dont add these.

thanks,

James

No, this is not a mnemonic. You might want to look at Wikipedia's description of Mnemonics.

Now these sound like mnemonics.

You might.

The JavaRanch SCJD FAQ has a section titled "Has the marking changed between the old assignment and the new assignment?". In the breakdown of points, there are 2 possible areas where you might lose points: the "General Considerations", and the "User Interface". The old assignment used to break down "General Considerations", and there are 2 applicable areas in that: "Ease of use" and "Good Human/Computer Interaction".

So in my opinion there is the potential for you to loose points. And the code to add mnemonics is extremely minimal. So my recommendation would be to add them.

Regards, Andrew
