Hi,

I got my SCJP passed 3 years back with the Java 1.4 and now I need to do the SCJD to enhance my knowledge on Java development. I know that it is possible to sit for the exam with any version of SCJP including 1.4 but my problem is that do I need to study more harder than a person who got passed with 1.5 because I think the new SCJD is biased toward latest SCJP?
Or am I really asking a dumb question from you gurus?

Hi,

I strongly believe this will not affect you at all!
Just like you, I did SCJP 1.4 and later on I did SCJD with 6.0

SCJD is a home assignment, with unlimited time. The fact that you don't know generics (for instance) will not be a factor. In fact, just because you use JDK 6.0 does not mean you must use the new features.

Also, a lot of features are behind the scene. For instance, (if I recall correctly) JDK 5.0 introduced more efficient SWING libraries (faster visually), but the syntax barely changed. A JDK 1.4 programmer is still able to develop SWING application the same way with JDK 5.0 or 6.0...

Regards,
Alex

Hi again,

I forgot to add that you should/could get Andrew's book. You'll find all the technical information in his book.

Thank you Alex. Now I am much more clear about getting certified. I am thinking of taking the Monkhouse's book and Cathy Sierra's one but not concluded yet just comparing over each one and trying to start the process.

Best regards

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
