Monkhouse book question: DBClient not Serializable

Hi everybody,

I am reading the Monkhouse book and trying to follow the examples. Currently I am looking at the RMI part of the book. I can't seem to figure out how it is possible that the DBClient is not Serializable. In chapter 6 at page 188 the DvdDatabaseImpl (which extends UnicastRemoteObject) creates a DvdDatabase (which implements DBClient) which it them uses to get DVD objects.

This DvdDatabaseImpl class is being send over the network using RMI and it has a reference to the DBClient (implemented by DvdDatabase). How is it possible that this DBClient is not serializable? I was under the impression that the entire object graph of the UnicastRemoteObject is being send over the network, therefore it should be serializable.

Can somebody please explain how this works?

Best regards,
