I think nobody wanted to commit anything. That is why no reply here. I heard( I am not commiting either) people spend 2 to 3 months (minimum) before taking the exam. This does not include your time spent on learning java fundamentals. This is only for the exam preparation.
Hope I am not misleading you.

Yes, there is no right answer to your question. It entirely depends on your Java knowledge.
Even experienced Java people have failed in this exam when they tried to take it without preparations So it is worth reading one or two certification guides even if you come from a Java background. On the other hand, people who have no prior Java experience will have to tread a longer way since they will have to learn Java first.
Also, if you want to score more percentile, then you will have to know the concepts like the back of your hand and this will take more time than is required just to get certified.
Good luck with your preparations

I am preparing for the exam for more than a year, I didnt knew Java and I started learning and preparing for the exam at the same time, that helps me for finding a job. Now I am working in Java about a year ago, preparing for the exam was a good way for learning the language for me. I read Bruce Eckels book, its a great book! With a friend we read 1 chapter a week and prepared a set of questions for the other one about it. We are taking the mocks now since 2 months, I feel very sure now but I need a little more time. Everybody here that passes the exam says that they spent 2 or 3 months preparing it. First I felt a bit frustating about the time but then I understand that the time isnt the point.
Good luck!
