I have just take the exam. It was more difficult than the mocks of Green. It was like Khalids mock level or a bit harder than that.
10-12 questions about Threads, some about situations of deadlocks.
10-12 about IO: the File object, the new model (Writer, Reader)
4-5 There where a few about the event model.
7 about inner classes in deep.
7 about Collections (study in deep the hierachy).
8-10 about Flow Control (for thinking a lot about the execution of the code.)
The questions about exceptions where easy.
5-6 Layouts easier.
The rest was all about fundamentals, polimorphism, operators precedence.
I thought in some places that when they ask to answer 2 questions I found 3 correct answers, and in some questions with radio buttons I found more than one right and I tried to answer the best that fits the requirements but sometimes that was hard.
If I passed the score will be poor. It was a good experience and I will wait until the results for thinking about giving the final exam.
I am not depress, nor tired, I had 10 minutes for reviewing, not too much!
Any question?

Hi, I think I came late with my post and couldnt help anyone because there are no replies yet.
It will be interesting if we could share our experience with the beta, with the ones who took it.
Who agree with my first post and who not? Why?
Did you think this was more difficult than the mocks seen?
I couldnt make a list of the number of difficult questions, so I only remember that questions and I failed in a lot of them but I dont remember if there where a few of difficult questions compare with the total...
Does somebody know how the are going to correct the exam? If they are going to discart some questions or they will evaluate the total number of questions?

I almost agree with your beta experience, except for I was left with only 2 minutes when I completed the test and did not get any opportunity to take another look at the answers.
It would be definitely interesting to know how they are going to evaluate.
I was one of the early ones to take the beta and I described my experience in response to an earlier question. Great to know that someone else also found it difficult compared to the mocks.

I also whole-heartedly agree with Marcela's observations. Yes the paper was far more sophisticated than the mocks. Yes I also found that there were questions like the one with radio buttons having 2 correct answers each equally attractive. I did not have time to complete the questions. I was amazed at the high quality of questions.
And to show how sophisticated the questions were:- One of the questions required the application of a little known funda. The normal mocks & cert. books merely state that, outside the package, a protected member is accessible from a subclass. BUT that is NOT the whole truth!! It is also necessary that such access must be made in implementing code. To understand one must read Gosling's Java Language Specification. The question was meant to trap those who only rely on the commonly known part.
There were good questions on thread, which required a lot of thought, unless you already have a lot of experience.
If I recall rightly there were questions that wrongly assumed the Throwable was an interface. That must be an error.
Overall it was a truly enlightening, if exhausting experience.

THe mock exam was one awesome experience.
Oh Boy, did I expect a synchronized in a synchronized code ???
or how bout do while statements with i++ and --j combined with labeled breaks and for(; - I
I must say it was more than just knowing Java concepts

I can't agree with you guys more! It's aweful and cool experience to take the Beta exam, question distribution just looks like all you said. I never expected so much problem on synchronized and io and the time consuming i++, --j :-(... and worse, it's not a high quality paper, some question with no right answer, even missing keywords. Even though I have 30min. to review, I'm not sure I can pass, but maybe.
After the exam, I can't find my score, so I thought something wrong with the system, when I ask help from the test center, I found on his computer, there is a list shows my state is "fail",
I felt very sad when I saw that, is that the true result? anyone has similiar experience? I don't feel I did a bad work. How to find out the score of Beta? If the SCJP will be like the beta, I will take it before Oct. and suggest so to all you are going to take the exam.

Hi All:
I am very sad about the BetaExam. Many questions are about Threads and I didn't see them in the any mock tests. A lot of Qs are in the I/O. The Qs of flow control also are difficult. I also find some Qs are wrong. At the end of my test I can't find any message about my result. I let the officer help me, but in vain. I think the new test will be more tough the present one.

I just called my testing center and they tell me that the exam said fail at the end too!
Somebody have to ask Diane if this is the real result. Do you agree?

From Diane:
That is just the default when there is a score of 0. Your exam will be scored
once we have put together the final format of the test and determined what the
pass score will be.

We have to wait, that was one of the conditions
Good luck to all!

Whatever's Beta is beeta (past)....
For the benefit of aspiring SCJPs, I'd like to discuss the topis u need to stress on :
I/O - Focus on Constructors - incl subclasses of Reader, Writer
File class - method signatures.
AWT - LayoutMangament - Try out small programs with GridLayout and flowlayout in panels and frames and resize them to see the effect.
(try adding three buttons, one over the other in a frame to see the effect)
Event Handling - Stick to objectives.
Threads : Try out programs with synchronized blocks.
Check out what happens with public synchronized void run()
or new Thread() { public void run{ ..... } } .run();
Is calling a start method on another thread object a way to directly stop a thread ?
Operators : Try out something like the following (changed version):
{
int i = 0, j = 10;
$one : for( ; ; ) {
i++;
for( ; ; ) if(++i > j--) break one;
}
System.out.println("i" = i + "j = " + j);
}
I'll update you with more pretty soon.

Hi all...
I think I got a comparitively easy paper...looking at the topic distribution you have given.
I got
around 10 qns on Threads
5 to 6 on I/O constructors
MOST on ++ and --
one on shift operation
I dont remember seeing inner classes questions
5 or 6 on collections
default values of primitives and references,
5 or 6 on AWT.
I dont think it was harder than any of the mock exams.With the right amount of preparation I might have done good but anyway I am all set for the real one.
And about the result I got....,From the online test itself the administrator showed me my result.Perhaps many of you didnt ask the person concerned in the test center.
Anyway...I remain undeterred by my result for the next exam.
Regards...
Aparanji

Hello Deepak,
The test showed 'fail'...but I am having my doubts as most of us seem to have a similar result.Maybe its best to wait until we get the results after 6 weeks as they have specified.
Regards.
