I just passed the SCJP thanks to Bill Brogden, Java Ranch, and those many generous souls who have written free mock exams. I read through Bill's Java2 ExamCram book and then took his first mock exam and got a 63% . I then reread the book, and started to follow the posts here as well as taking every mock exam I could get hold of. By the last few days I was scoring in the high 80's and low 90's on most tests.
SUGGESTION: Read the language specification after you have done some preliminary studying. It cleared up a lot of issues for me.
The preparation was brutal but thanks to all I passed. Java is my first programming language and I wasn't sure I'd be able to pass this thing on the first try. Three cheers for the JavaRanch

Congratulations Brian !!! It is a marvelous Achievement considering that Java is ur First programming Langauge. I am planning to appear for SCJP early next week and right now I am reading JLS. It is really helpful in understanding concepts very well and as u pointed out it needs some initial understanding.
JavaRanch is undoubtedly the best site that I ever seen so for and it is already proven from the people who have followed this site and took the exam. I am delighted to be one of the followers of this site before taking the 'real' exam.
Input from SCJP-eans like u will help us achive better results..
Best of luk for ur future Java Endeavors!!
Thanks..
