Hi everyone,
I took a Java course that was supposed to prepare me for the Sun Java Programmer's Certification test. But, unfortunately, I found out that it was not even close to being good enough to prepare anyone for the test. What I would like to know from the people who have actually passed the test, is how much time does one need to prepare. I'm not starting from scratch, and I can dedicate practically all my time for Java. Thank you.

How much time really depends on the person. While one person may take a year, another may only need a month. Background plays an important role. Such as programming experience, java experience, etc.
By the way, could you please let everyone know what course you took so that noone else will be hoodwinked.

Lee & Marcus,
Thanks for your replies. Well, Lee, the course that I took was at an Indian institute called NIIT. It is supposed to be the best one in India. But, as far as Java is concerned, I found it's course too easy to be a preparation course for the SCJP2 exam. I scored 84% in their test. I was so confident after that, I decided to take a mock test on the Net. Guess what, I scored......well, I only got one correct answer out of 20 !!
Need I say more?
Marcus, I was hoping to prepare within one month. Do you think I'm being too optimistic here? I do have quite a good knowledge as far as OOP is concerned, having done C++ and VB earlier. But at the end, Lee is right. It does depend on the person. Thanks again guys.

Ahmed,
From the posts that I have read, most of the people who have accomplished the feat of preparing in one month or less time have either prior java experience, or prior oop experience.
Good luck, work hard and you can do it =)

I am in the same postion as you except I have not taken any java training cource, no c++ or any oo background. I do have 3 years experience in a cobol type language called Natural.
I learned java on my spare time during my lunch hour for three weeks. Then I started studying for the java certification exam begining october 2nd. I've promised my boss that I will pass it on nov 4th. If I can do it I'm sure you can do it. Specialy if your goal is only to pass it. Passing seems easy. Its getting those very hight scrores in the 80's and 90's that would require a lot of work. At least thats what I'm telling myself. I'll let you know if I pass with only a month worth of studying.
You can do it.
Best of Luck.

I took about 1 month to prepare for it and passed it.
I had prior Java experience though having been doing java for the last 18 months.

Kourosh & Tinyiko, thanks a lot for your replies. They're really encouraging. It's good to know that I'm not the only one who's trying to do what many people have said "not possible" !!
Kourosh, all the best for your exam, and I really hope that you'll do well in it (not just pass !!). I read a message posted by someone else on JavaRanch and that person has got good marks after just one month of preparations. Now I do believe that it is possible.
Thank you all.
