static inner class

Hi friendz,
I read these lines in a book,can some one explain this:
Static inner class must access the members of its enclosing class through and object because it is static.
That is, it cannot refer to members of its enclosing class directly.

Static Context, inner classes or methods, cannot refer/access/manipulate etc instances of the same class or any other class for which they have access.
Reason; static is associated with class(s) and they cannot refer to a particular instance member because they are not aware of any particular instance(s) except when you supply a instance (or create an instance) for them to refer to.
