Hello folks !

Right now, six people (including myself) showed some interest in this study group :

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Manish : manishware@usa.net
Atin Sehgal : saggi_78@yahoo.com
Thiru : chakratn@yahoo.com
Ersin Eser : esersin@hotmail.com
Subramaniam Venkatesan : subs197@yahoo.com
Dave : foudental@netscape.net

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

First of all, I think it would be nice to get to know each other better because we'll be spending the next month or so together. So here I go !
As you all know now, my name is Dave. I've been a programmer for 4 years. During these years, I've worked a lot with VB, Lotus Notes, Access, SQL Server, ACCPAC and Crystal Reports. I've been interested in Java for quite a while now but doesn't have any "serious" experience on the job market with this platform.
As for my personal life, I live in Montreal, Canada and my mother tongue is french (my english is not perfect, sorry !).
My background in Java : I've read "Java - How to program" by Harvey and Paul Deitel from cover to back (good book). I've also read parts of "Java 2 - The complete reference" by Naughton and Schildt. Finally, I've done a tutorial in Microsoft J++ (useless).
My study guide : "The complete Java 2 certification study guide" by Simon Roberts and al. Maybe I'll buy the Mughal book also but not right now.
What I expect from this study group : Share experiences, hints, interrogations, thoughts, etc.. We all have the same goal, we want to pass the certification by the end of March or in April. If we help each other, I think that it's gonna be easier for all of us.
My strategy : Read the Roberts book at least two times. Take as much mock exams as I can. Buy the JQ+ exam simulator and practice until I score over 85 %.
All messages concerning our study group should be posted under this topic.
That's about it for me... So what do you think ? Make your suggestions so we can get this thing started ! And don't forget, it would be nice getting to know each other so post a short message with the usual info : who you are, where do you come from, what do you expect from this study group, etc..
See ya wednesday !

Regards,
Dave

Original post by ersin eser
Hi all,
This is ersin,
as far as experience goes i have almost none.Recently i have graduated from a technical school with a diploma in programming,i did ok during the course of my studies.I am an entry level programmer with a knowledge of cobol II,db2,oracle,c++,vb6,html,Javascript,asp,VbScript,xml.Recently i have audited an introductory level Java course at the same school i have graduated from, with all these languages i had a chance to create projetcs to write simple programs which dealt with various databases.Last week i have started to work for same school as an instructor assistant,i think i was lucky : until April 1st i am in the Java class as an assistant in which i am being exposed to second part of the Java course in which we deal with servlets awt swing.I would like to get into a position in which i can use Java :-) but of course in USA it is extremley hard to get an entry level position in Java field so I decided to give a shot and try this exam , if i pass i assume that might help me to get that position.Well i am a fast learner and this is my career change i had an MD degree,I really love coding and i believe this is the right field ,so far everything is OK for a beginner.
I read Simon's book once and started to read Bruce Eckel's book to get detailed info,I am planning to read Simons book once/twice more. I just took Marcus's exam 1, they recommend you to take it later but i couldn't help it,that's my way of learning, hands on and questions...of course it was a bummer got 66%,so i have 30% to go before the real one.
My expectation from the group : to push myself, basically when i hear you guys studying i believe that is going to push me to study harder. And exchenge few questions that we might get stuck...
good luck to all
ersin

Hi Dave,Manish,Thiru ,Ersin Eser ,Subramaniam Venkatesan and all the friends,

It seems I am the only one left who has not introduced himself yet.
Sorry for that.I am Atin Sehgal , Bachelor of Engineering Electronics & Telecommunication , currently working as Web Administrator in a leading Financial institution in India
My work revolves round web technology and I have recently started working on JSP.We are using Broadvision and oracle 8i as backend.
I am quite impressed with the way Java technology has come up and shaken the world.Though I am not an authority neither i have an experience to say that no other technology is better than Java, But my feeling is this is good.
When i turned up on the job scene abt 2 years ago(my experience is of 1-1/2 years in web),it was in demand and java is still in demand.
I am preparing JCP and wd luv to be a part of this group so that we can share our views, experience, suggestion , advice.
I am planning to devote atleats1 hour to my studies everyday and 3-4 hours on my off days.
I am reffering Khalid , Pat naughton and Simon Roberts and Heller.
All suggestions and help are welcome.
Let all of us togather try to achieve the main objective of our group i.e
To clear Sun Java Examination with good percentage.

Ofcourse you can all be members here, what we are going to do is discuss all our doubts what we have and prepare ourselves well sothat we can take the exam within a month. so if you think you are going to take the exam in this time you can join in. Ofcourse we plan to exchange any notes or tips, whatever we know, and we can only know it by going through the other messages, maha anna's site (damn good) and through all the other forums.

ok. I though of making an attempt to improve our contacts with the mail. yes the mail works. you can use html tags too. but this is just for letting the members know about whats going on here sothat even if you dont visit this page, you will knowing about things. anyway, I am not able to edit my previos post. I think there a problem with the table and form that i have used. If anyone can, they can delete this post on "posted March 01, 2001 04:49 PM "
okay if Iam able to edit it, I will add the new members too. If iam not able to do it, still the new members can receive the mail if you are mailing it to the "study group members". I will post all the tutorials I have collected sofar on the net.
lets start with our preparation. you can post your messages in this forum and then mail it to all the "study group members" sothat others will know about it. I have put a password sothat you may not receiving any spam-mails and please use it to clear your doubts only as I have a count on the number of mails.
thank you,
subbu

Hi All,
It is greate that lot of people are showing interest in joining this group.
How far u guys have completed? What is ur plans/strategies in completing the syllabus and taking mock exams..
I feel it is good to share their study plans so that if any one is going out of track or not planned properly, can correct him/her self and take the exam on planned date.
I am planning to give the exam by First week of April.planning to study 1-1.5 hr daily(week days) and around 3-4 hrs week ends.
I have planned to study R&H for 3 weeks (Like completing 3-4 chapters on weekly basis) and repeating/revising the last weeks study in the subsequent weeks. It might be hard to revise and feel good as we won't forget what we have studied in the last week and can remember more and will be useful at the end.
After completing one round of R&H, want to revise the entire book on the 4th week.Paraley,if needed I will be referring some other books like Mughals/Compelte reference for more info.In the 5ht week planning to take mock exams and parallely revising once again the entire R&H book. This might help me.Then in the 6ht week, planning to give the exam.
It is highly appreciable if some one gives their plans of study and taking mock exams..
Thanks,
Thiru

Hi,
I am interested in the SCJP group. I have been studying for the certification since last summer. I started out with very little experience in programming, but I am getting better every week. My email is: neuroknot@lycos.com
Thanks,
Steve

I'd appreciate it if you pronounced my name correctly. Pinhead, with a silent "H". Petite ad:
