We use extortion, threats, and bribery. Seriously, when it is determined more moderators are needed, we nominate people who have been around awhile and are generally helpful. Sheriffs are chosen by Paul Wheaton, but I believe he strongly considers the input of the other sheriffs.

Yup, that's more or less how it worked for Jason The only change I'd make to Matthew's description is that the nominations are made and discussed in private by the moderators and no-one is told the process is occuring until the decision has been made. It is not a public process. Sherrifs are usually selected from the Bartenders, but this is completely Paul's decision and he can choose anyone he wants. Nominations are ususlly based on at least one of 3 criteria: * a proven dedication to the Ranch (ie someone who has visitted consistently over a long period of time) * a proven knowledge of Java or related technology (sometimes used to rope Authors) * someone who will help us achieve world domination. (don't laugh, it's happened )
Re: Jason, I asumed it was based on the old "Better he is inside the tend p***ing out than outside P***ing in". But my assumption is based on extreme ignorance.
