Private methods cannot be overridden in subclasses because they are not visible in subclasses (see JLS �184.108.40.206). Overriding implies participation in Polymorphism and this does not happen when you introduce a method that happens to have the same signature as a private method in a superclass. Even though they have the same signature, the two methods are totally unrelated.
