Hi Mark,
I've written myself a JNLP primer, simple and practical, freely available to anybody from the informit.com website. Just search for "JNLP marinilli" and browse the results.
I hope it will help.

Thanks Dr Mauro. I found the link to your two part article from informit. I've added it to another thread containing links to JNLP articles.
