Web Start and Database Application

+Pie Number of slices to send: Send
Ok, now the next question.. Could I use this method to deliver an application to access a database on a shared network?
For instance, if I wanted to create somthing like a scheduling tool to track when an employee was going to be in or working a separate shift, and all the computers have the same drive mapping, can I allow them to "download" the initial app (using Web Start) from an intranet site then allow them to access a database with the information from a shared drive?
The reason is that I need / want to create an application in Java (to keep from losing the skills completely) and I don't have a server that I can run a .jsp architecture on. I could create an applet to run on the regular server, but I think, in the long run, an application on the Desktop (using the Web Start technology) would be more efficient.
Of course, if I'm wrong in this assumption (which is often the case) I am open to other suggestions..

Thanks!

Hi Sam,
I think, in the long run, an application on the Desktop (using the Web Start technology) would be more efficient.
I am not sure about that but if we have Java webstart app and the database is reachable by the webstart app then is it not just JDBC connection issue?
Webstart will be helpful as you can make user download JRE you want and its all automatic...nor you would have to worry about changed application JAR file etc...And also you can make if offline application where users can put an icon on their desktop for the app...
well, I have just highligted webstart features so i'd say my 0 cents
Thanks!
