I am working on a game and want to add sound, which file types would work best for short sounds, like a bell? What about longer files, like background music?

Thanks in advance for your input.

I tend to roll with ogg vorbis. It's an open source format and there are plenty of Java API's for playback that are really easy to use. And they are small compressed, MP3 like, files so you aren't bloated with wav sized sound bits.

Thanks for the helpful suggestion. I have used ogg-vorbis on a Linux OS and liked it.
