Over the past few years we've seen enhancements in Java that has speeded it up and brought it closer to C++ in terms of performance. Do you expect to see Java to continue to improve it's performance, or do we have to wait for something else to come along that is as "portable" as Java and as fast as C++?

A couple of points:
- Java continues to get faster as more improvements are made to runtime optimization engines such as JITs and Hotspot technology.
- Optimizing compilers will help...if someone would just write one. I don't know of one commercially available yet
- I personally don't like the notion that Java has to be as fast as C++, or anything else. Years ago, people said C++ was not as fast as C and therefore inferior. Code written in Java only has to be "fast enough". Advances in hardware and processors are speeding things up nicely.
